Retaining Walls & Concrete Masonry
Manage slopes, prevent erosion, and add usable space to your property.
Why Retaining Walls Are Important
A retaining wall does more than look good. It holds back soil, prevents erosion, and creates level areas on sloped properties. Without a proper retaining wall, soil can wash away during heavy rain, undermine foundations, or cause damage to driveways, patios, and landscaping. If your property has any kind of slope or elevation change, a retaining wall might be necessary to keep everything stable.
We build retaining walls and concrete masonry in Compton, CA for residential and commercial properties. Whether you need a low garden wall or a tall structural wall to support a steep slope, we design and build it to meet engineering standards and last for decades.
Types of Retaining Walls
Not all retaining walls are the same. The type you need depends on the height, soil conditions, drainage, and how much pressure the wall has to handle. Here are the most common options:
- •Poured concrete walls: Strong, durable, and good for high walls or areas with heavy soil pressure. Can be finished smooth or textured.
- •Concrete block walls: Built with interlocking masonry blocks. Faster to install than poured walls and good for moderate heights.
- •Segmental retaining walls: Made from modular concrete units that stack and interlock. Flexible design, easy to repair, and works well for curved walls.
- •Decorative masonry walls: Combines function with aesthetics using decorative blocks, stone veneer, or custom finishes.
- •Garden and landscape walls: Low walls that define spaces, create planting beds, or add visual interest to your yard.
If you also need concrete foundations or footings, we can handle that at the same time. Everything is designed to work together for maximum stability.
How We Build Retaining Walls
A retaining wall has to be strong enough to hold back soil, water, and pressure without tipping, sliding, or cracking. That requires proper design, solid footings, and good drainage. Here is how we do it:
Step 1: Site Assessment and Design
We evaluate the slope, soil type, drainage, and height of the wall. If engineering is required, we work with a structural engineer to design the wall correctly.
Step 2: Excavation and Footings
The area is excavated and a solid footing is poured to support the wall. The footing needs to be below the frost line and deep enough to handle the load.
Step 3: Wall Construction
The wall is built using the chosen materials. Each course is leveled and reinforced as needed. Drainage pipes are installed behind the wall to prevent water buildup.
Step 4: Backfill and Finishing
Gravel is placed behind the wall to promote drainage. The area is backfilled, compacted, and finished. The wall surface can be left as is or finished with stucco, stone veneer, or other materials.
We also work on concrete patios and other outdoor projects that might tie into retaining walls. Everything is planned and built to integrate seamlessly.
